What is Corporate Gifting?

Corporate gifting is the practice of creating a touchpoint with employees, clients, or prospects by sending a gift—whether giving a physical item such as a practical swag piece, an edible treat, or personalized clothing item, or via a non-physical gift such as an eGift card or an experience (such as airfare or concert tickets). These gifts may be meant to drive response (as with a prospecting gift) or reward behaviors (like a gift for making a purchase, referring a friend, or completing a download) when researching a product or service.

Bringing Cannabis into Corporate Gifting

Choosing the “perfect” gifts for employees, clients or prospects has never been an easy task for HR departments. With marijuana consumption becoming recreationally legal in the District of Columbia and some 33 US States and hemp consumption being legal in all 50 states, is it acceptable for companies to give cannabis, hemp, or counterculture lifestyle accessories as gifts? We say yes and not just for the reasons you think. As businesses are becoming more cannabis friendly, finding shows that these businesses are having better success in recruitment as well as business to business relations . By rewarding employees, clients and prospects with cannabis and cannabis related gifts, businesses are seeing that staying up and adapting with trends has valuable return–as long as you know it will be welcomed by the recipient.

How will HR know if is it okay to gift cannabis or cannabis accessories to a client or prospect?

There is no science to this, and it is extremely important to know if a cannabis friendly gift will be welcomed. Just like you wouldn’t want to send a case of wine to a sober living center, you wouldn’t want to send a cannabis gift box to an anti-drug organization. So what can an HR department do to figure out which vendors would be a good candidate? It’s simple, get to know your clients and prospects more.

Here are a few indirect questions you can ask clients to figure out if they are cannabis friendly:
What kind of HR policies do you have in place?
Do you test your employee’s for THC?
Do you work with any cannabis brands? (depends on the industry)

How will HR know if is it okay to gift cannabis or cannabis accessories to an employee?

To us the answer is pretty simple, if your business is located in a recreational state and you are willing to gift an employee alcohol then you are okay to gift an employee cannabis. This is not an invitation for an employee to consume cannabis before or during work, just like gifting alcohol isn’t an invitation to drink before or during work. Almost all employers by now have implemented policies to prevent alcohol and drug use in the workplace and it can be made clear that the policies remain.

Additionally, HR departments should make their employee’s feel comfortable with disclosing if the employee consume cannabis, whether it is marijuana or hemp. This helps cultivate a friendly and open workplace where employee’s feel comfortable being who they are. When an employee feels like they belong and their managers care about who they are, then production will rise. Not only that, but we have found that recruitment is easier for cannabis related business.

What are acceptable gifts for Corporate Giving?

At this point we need to be clear on a couple topics. First, there is a difference between marijuana and hemp. Marijuana contains a high amount of THC (providing a medium to strong high) and CBD which contains no trace amount of THC (providing extremely minimal to no high effects). Second, that if you are planning to purchase marijuana there is a limit on the amount of marijuana one is allowed to purchase and there is no limit on the amount of hemp one can purchase.

With that said there are still lots of options to choose from. First choice as pertaining to marijuana consumption would be to purchase a gift card to the local dispensary. You might even be able to call the local dispensary and work out a deal with them, it is in their benefit too! Other choices could be practical swag like stash boxes and stash jars (can be personalized with company logo) or CBD treats.
